The staff of the Case Management Unit provide procedural or referral information to pro se litigants on family law and dependency issues. The staff are not attorneys, and cannot give legal advice. They provide assistance to the judiciary by reviewing cases prior to setting court dates when all parties to a case are representing themselves.

Investigators contracted by the Office of Social Investigation and Study assist the Family Law division in instances where child custody is in dispute by completing investigations that evaluate family functioning in the context of Florida Statute 61.13 (Subsections 3 a-t) and providing recommendations pertaining to the establishment or modification of a Parenting /Time Share plan.

The Children's Justice Center (CJC) provides a neutral, safe, child-friendly atmosphere for children when there are allegations of child sexual, physical abuse, when  children have witnessed crimes or when visitations are necessary in a supervised setting. Programs and services provided by the CJC are the Supervised Visitation Program and the Children’s Advocacy Center. The Children’s Advocacy Center (located at Mary Lee’s House) consists of the Outreach Program, Depositions, Forensic Interviews and Remote Testimony.

Court Interpreters interpret/translate orally or in writing between, spoken or sign language and English. Staff Interpreters offer Spanish interpreting services.  Freelance interpreters offer services in more than 20 languages and dialects, as well as for the hearing impaired ensuring equal access to the court process according to Florida statutes.

represented by a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) in court. While the benefits of this are immeasurable to the child, there aren't enough Guardian Advocates for all of Hillsborough County's abused and neglected children. The GAL program doesn't receive adequate public funding. That's where VOICES helps. Voices for Children is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide the volunteer guardians the financial means necessary for Guardian ad Litem to continue this vital service to children.

Mediation is a process in which a neutral third party assists the parties in reaching an agreement on issues in dispute. They can also assist with changing an existing order when both parties are in agreement.

 

Parenting Class
In all cases involving minor or dependent children, both parties are required to attend a parenting class before the case can be scheduled for hearing.

The Central Governmental Depository, also known as the Support Department, is responsible for maintaining support accounts.  The term support can be defined as child support, alimony, and monies owed to the State of Florida Department of Revenue for government assistance.  The depository keeps the official record of all support activity in these types of cases.

Family Forms Clinic

The Family Forms Clinic is a free program that uses volunteer attorneys to help people who do not have an attorney complete Hillsborough County’s court-approved family law forms and packets. The Clinic services are available to anyone who is or will be a party in a FAMILY LAW CASE in Hillsborough County. The Clinic volunteers cannot help you with family law forms from another county or state. The volunteers will not complete financial affidavits or child support guidelines worksheets. The volunteers cannot determine whether you are using the correct forms and cannot suggest what you should write on the forms. The volunteers cannot represent you in court or give you legal advice.

The volunteers are available to help you only in person during walk-in hours -- first come, first served. No appointments are scheduled. The hours will vary depending on the availability of the volunteers. Call 813-864-2280, option 2, to listen to a recording that gives information and current walk-in hours. It is suggested that you visit the Legal Information Center before going to the Family Forms Clinic to make sure you are using the correct packet. The Family Forms Clinic is operated by Hillsborough County volunteer attorneys and the Bay Area Volunteer Lawyers Program.

Family Law Forms
Family law forms and instructions are available that have been approved by the Florida Supreme Court. These forms are not the only forms that can be filed in family law cases. The Supreme Court-approved forms and instructions are available for a fee, individually or in packets, in Room 630 of the George Edgecomb Courthouse, 800 East Twiggs Street, Tampa, Florida 33602, or for free online.

The Legal Information Center is a free program to provide information to people who are representing themselves in family law cases in Hillsborough County. The Legal Information Center attorney assists people on a walk-in basis -- first come, first served. No appointments are scheduled. The walk-in hours change each day. Call 813-864-2280, option 1, for hours and information. The Legal Information Center is operated by Bay Area Legal Services, a non-profit law firm. Funding for this program is provided by:  TECO Energy and the law firms of Holland & Knight and Carlton Fields Jorden Burt.

The James J. Lunsford Hillsborough County Law Library provides legal research materials for use by the public, attorneys, judges, and students. Research materials include Florida and Federal Statutes, corporate and medical law, family law, bankruptcy, and other legal matters. Books do not circulate, but copy machines are available to library patrons. The librarians on staff are not attorneys and cannot answer legal questions, but can direct visitors to appropriate books and resources.
