YLD Happy Hours
Another great networking opportunity for YLD members is our quarterly happy hours held during the Bar year. Young lawyers get together at bars and restaurants in the Tampa Bay area to mingle in a casual setting and make more personal connections. Students, judges, and other members of the HCBA are always welcome to join in the networking fun.
YLD Cornhole for a Cause
The Hillsborough County Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division has partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters Tampa Bay to host Cornhole for a Cause. We register teams of young lawyers and other cornhole players from around the area for a day-long cornhole tournament fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters. No matter your skill level, you are sure to have a great time. This is a day of outdoor fun for a wonderful cause!
YLD State Court Trial
The State Court Trial Seminar is a 5.0 credit CLE offered annually by the YLD that provides attorneys with advice and suggestions on all aspects of a trial. The seminar is hosted by a panel of Hillsborough County judges and includes presentations by many of the top local trial attorneys. Attendees have the unique opportunity to get advice from some of the best trial attorneys in the area, as well as comments from judges on effective trial techniques and strategies. The seminar is followed by a happy hour for those in attendance, including the judges and seminar speakers.
YLD Coffee at the Courthouse & Judicial Shadowing Day
Each year, volunteers from the YLD organize an early-morning program where young lawyers meet circuit and county judges in the spacious chambers of the chief judge for coffee and breakfast. This event gives attorneys an opportunity to interact with members of the judiciary in an informal setting to ask questions about anything that comes to mind. The program has been enthusiastically received by the judiciary and is now a staple of the YLD calendar. Following Coffee at the Courthouse, YLD members spend the day shadowing judges from the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit and Hillsborough County courts. The Judicial Shadowing Program provides members of the HCBA’s Young Lawyers Division the benefit of direct interaction with the judiciary in a way that may not be otherwise available early in a young lawyer’s career.
Time: 8 a.m. - Noon
Location: George Edgecomb Courthouse, 800 E Twiggs St. Tampa
As members of the legal community, we have the knowledge and skill to teach others about and promote the law. The HCBA and its Young Lawyers Division recognize that Law Week is an ideal platform to educate others while also honoring those who have contributed to our legal system. As part of this effort, the YLD sends legal professionals to classrooms across Hillsborough County to speak to children about the law, conduct mock trials and coordinate informative courthouse tours. Law Week is a fun and educational event benefiting the entire community.
Steak & Sports Day
Every year, members of the Young Lawyers Division visit a local foster home to host its annual Steak & Sports Day. This program benefits youngsters who are separated from their families. The day is filled with sizzling steaks and a variety of sports. The sports range from fun team events to big bounce houses. The YLD aims to provide an afternoon full of fun activities, which have included rock climbing, a water slide, sports, kickball, and games. Each year the YLD strives to make the event even bigger and better than the year before.
Holidays in the New Year
Each year, the Young Lawyers Division hosts its annual Holidays in January event, which brings together foster children, foster parents, and young lawyers for a fun-filled day of activities and holiday gift-giving. Every child leaves with a gift, and nobody leaves without a smile!
Hon. Robert J. Simms High School Mock Trial Competition
The annual Honorable Robert J. Simms High School Mock Trial Competition gathers students from across Hillsborough County to participate in a mock trial competition. Schools are invited to form a mock trial team, where students play the parts of both attorneys and witnesses. Each school has a faculty advisor, and local attorneys volunteer their time to assist as coaches. The winner from the countywide competition moves on to represent Hillsborough County in the statewide competition. This event gives YLD members the chance to interact with Tampa Bay students and to encourage their education in law.
