What is Law Week? Law Week is a week-long series of events centered around Law Day, which was first established by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1958.  Law Day is a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law and the legal process that contributes to the freedoms that all Americans share.

The American Bar Association’s 2019 Law Day Theme, "Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society," focuses on how in the United States and around the world, freedom of speech and the press are among the most important foundations for a free society. Free speech and free press are prominent topics in public discourse and litigation. It is impossible to imagine a free society without these individual liberties, yet historical and current debates surrounding them continually challenge us to consider their boundaries and resilience. Changes in technology have reshaped how free speech and free press work in the everyday world.

The HCBA celebrates Law Week by sending volunteers to our courthouse to lead student tours, and to classrooms across the county to speak to the children about the Law Week theme and to conduct mock trials.  Law Week 2019 will take place from March 11-15.

Interested in Volunteering?  If you are interested in signing up to lead a courthouse tour, conduct a mock trial, and/or give a classroom speech, please contact Dane Heptner at  By donating just a couple of hours of your time, you will have the opportunity to educate, inspire and interact with the children of our community.

There are three programs you can sign up for by using the links below to browse availability and pick a 1-hour volunteer spot that works with your schedule. The programs and links are:

(1) The Classroom Speakers Program, click here to sign up. The Classroom Speakers programs invites attorneys into middle and high school classes to discuss the Law Week theme, legal careers, or other relevant topics.

(2) The Mock Trial Program, click here to sign up.  The Mock Trial program invites attorneys into local elementary schools to play the role of one of the classic characters in the famous tale "Goldie Locks and the Three Bears." If you have a team of three, please sign-up for all three spots at the school and put the names of your team members in the comments section. If you don't have a team, we will use to help create a team for you. We will send you a confirmation e-mail along with the script once the teams have been set.

(3) The Courthouse Tours Program, click here to sign up.  The Courthouse Tours program invites attorneys to lead tours of the George Edgecomb Courthouse. Classes of 25-30 students are bused in and paired with an attorney who will follow a proposed tour route through the courthouse before returning the children to their starting point, whereupon they will have a chance to hear from the judiciary in Courtroom 1 located on the 6th floor. Attorney tour leaders should sign up for a 10 o'clock or 11 o'clock tour, and only Judges should sign up for the 10 o'clock or 11 o'clock speaking engagements in Courtroom 1.

If you are not familiar with the Platform, here's how it works in 3 easy steps: (1) Click the link to see the requests & availability; (2) Review the options listed and choose the available spot(s) that works best for you; (3) Sign up!  It's THAT easy - you will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on The website also does not share your email address with anyone.
